SCHOOL OF PRELIMINARY AND REMEDIAL STUDIES (SPRS)

The School of Preliminary and Remedial Studies was established in 2005 by the Management of Kaduna Polytechnic with the objective of providing remedial and other bridging programmes for candidates desiring such alternative opportunities to launch themselves into tertiary level of education.

Consequently, the School runs the following Programmes:
  • Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB)

The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) was set up in 1974, under the statutes 5 of the Ahmadu Bello University law, to run the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) Examination, as an alternative to A’ Level Examination for students or candidates who may wish to seek for undergraduates admission into Ahmadu Bello University and other universities. The programme was envisaged as a bridge after secondary school education to prepare candidates academically, mentally and socially for challenges of university education.

The IJMB Examination is based on an approved IJMB syllabus produced by harmonizing the contnts of the former syllabus of the former higher school certificate, London GCE, Cambridge A-Level Examination and 100 Level curriculums of the Nigerian universities.

IJMB is a qualifying Examination conducted yearly, essentially for advanced level subjects for admission into Nigerian universities and foreign universities into 200 Levels. In addition, two ordinary subjects (English and Mathematics are also offered as equivalent to WASC or NECO O-levels for candidates who may be deficient in them. Candidates for the IJMB exams are presented through the affiliated institutions such as SPRS Kaduna Polytechnic which is saddled with the responsibilities of providing teaching and training the facilities for the candidates. Currently there are over 53 affiliated centres across the country including SPRS Kaduna Polytechnic.

a. ENTRY QUALIFICATION FOR THE IJMB EXAMINATION

Candidates seeking for admission into the programme must possess a minimum of five (5) credits at O’ level from WAEC, NECO or NABTEB in not more than two sittings which must include 3 basic subjects in addition to Mathematics and English Language. Deficiencies are allowed in either Mathematics for Art and Social Science candidates or English language for Science candidates. While deficiency in both Mathematics and English Language are accepted from candidates that come from educationally less developed states (ELDS) of Nigeria. These deficiencies most remedied before the end of the IJMB programme.

b. IJMB Subject Combinations

The IJMB subjects’ combinations were compiled with the aim of streamlining and making them relevant to the proposed course of specialisation as obtained and accepted in the universities. The approved course combinations are arrived at after due consultation with relevant documents related to Direct Entry Requirements for various programmes of studies in the Nigerian Universities as specified in the JAMB Brochure.

c. IJMB TEACHING AND EXAMINATION

Teaching of IJMB programme is solely guided by a compiled syllabus issued by ABU Zaria and the contents of the syllabus cover 100 level University and some part of 200 level syllabus which must be covered within a minimum of 12 calendar months. The centre strictly adhere to the IJMB academic calendar. At the end of the programme the students will be enrolled with the IJMB Secretariat at ABU Zaria for their final A’ level Examination. Where a student has deficiency in O-Level Mathematics, English or both will be allowed to remedy them in the final IJMB Examination. No candidate will be presented for IJMB Examination before the twelve month (12) duration. The IJMB examination is moderated by JAMB through the JAMB appointed moderators selected from different universities across the country. The Examination is administered by supervisors at the affiliated institution including SPRS Kaduna Polytechnic. The supervisors are appointed by the IJMB office which comprises of senior academics officers from the affiliated institution and ABU Zaria.
